Winter League Round-up

With Spring officially here and the Winter League matches fast becoming a distant (and frosty) memory, here’s a summary of how our teams did over the winter months.

Our Men’s Cymru Kitchens 1st team continued their climb up the league, finishing top of Division 2 with 76 points out of a possible 80. But it wasn’t as straightforward as the 12 point margin over Dinas Powys in second place might suggest. 5 of the 10 matches were level on events won, with Whitchurch winning 4 out of the 5 on the number of sets or games won. So a very competitive season sees the CK 1sts up into the top division for next winter for the first time.

WTC entered a second Cymru Kitchens team for the first time last winter. Ian Shipley’s team ended up as runners-up in Division 7 to Mackintosh in a division reduced to 5 teams after Barry pulled out.

The Men’s Veterans also had a good season, finishing as runners-up just behind Chepstow in Division 2. The youngster Paul Butcher, making his Vets debut, added some Premiership class to the squad throughout the season. Expect a return to Division 1 in the Autumn.

Turning to the Ladies, our Cymru Kitchens team had a very tight season in Division 2, finishing 5th, with a number of matches being decided on ‘games won’. Our Ladies Vets were back up in Division 1 this season and finished a creditable 5th. The team has ‘yo-yoed’ between the top 2 divisions regularly over the years. so while it may be a return to Division 2 next winter, they remain as competitive as ever.

Stork Visits WTC

Congratulations to Head Coach Melissa and Leighton on the birth of their new son, Fletcher. Doubtless he’ll be on court with a racquet in his hand as soon as he can walk!

ROOSEVELT headline WTC Xmas Party

Let your hair down (if you still have some) on Saturday 13 December at the WTC Christmas Party. Local rock ‘n’ roll band ‘ROOSEVELT’ will be making sure the whole evening goes with a swing, so make sure you’re there.

If you want to know why they’re called ‘ROOSEVELT’ then you’ll have come down on the night …!

Tickets are on sale from the BAR – only £6 each!!

Curry Evening

Just a reminder that there’s a Curry Evening on Friday 21 November at the Club now starting at 7.00pm for all members. There’ll be a delicious range of tastes from the sub-continent to sample in the form of a BUFFET plus two curries with rice, chicken and beef. The buffet is coming from the award-winning MANGO HOUSE in Westgate Street, organised by Club Treasurer and bon viveur Huw Davies. And due to Huw’s negotiating skills, the buffet is only £5 per person!!

Plus, Huw is organising a selection of bottled beers to accompany the food. Everyone is welcome, so it’ll be great to see as many members next Friday. Just turn up!

As it’s the eve of the Wales v New Zealand rugby international, feel free to wear any sports top to add to the colour of the evening (yes, even Cardiff City tops will do!). There’ll be rugby on BT SPORT to add to the atmosphere … and the bar will be open till late …!

And don’t forget, if you took part in the grounds & maintenance working party a few weeks ago, you’re due some FREE food and drink!!

Melissa’s Open Day Proves A Hit

Melissa House has officially started as our new Head Coach and WTC is very pleased to welcome her to the Club. As a first introduction, she held an ‘Open Afternoon & Evening’ on Thursday 4 September and plenty of members turned up to say hello and chat to her about her new Autumn Coaching Programme.

Term starts on Monday 8 September and runs through until December. We wish Melissa every success at WTC for this term, next year and hopefully many years to come!

WTC Bids Farewell to ‘Rob The Coach’

The Clubhouse was full of members on Thursday 28 August to offer departing Head Coach Rob Macdonald their best wishes as he leaves WTC to embark on his new university course in London. It was great to see so many turning out to enjoy the evening and celebrate Rob’s 8 years at the club.

Jack Ham manned the BBQ and made some delicious salads (as usual) and a selection of homemade cakes to mark the occasion. There was plenty of social tennis played before the late August light went and members crowded inside for Rob’s presentation.

Club President Alan Samuel handed over a collection from the members that’ll hopefully help him buy a candle or two for his student attic room. We wish Rob all the best and look forward to seeing him in the future back at WTC as a very welcome visitor. ‘Au revoir’, Rob!

WTC Appoints New Head Coach

WTC is delighted to announce that Melissa House is taking over from Rob Macdonald as our Head Coach from 1st September. It’s a very important appointment for the Club and we consider that WTC is very lucky to have secured her services.

A native of Penarth, Melissa is a fully licensed Level 4 coach and has been a senior and junior Welsh International in her time. She’s currently coach to the South Wales County Girls u18 and u14 teams and will continue in that position alongside her new role as our Head Coach.

Melissa has recently been combining roles as Junior Tennis Manager at Virgin Active Glamorgan and Mini Tennis Performance Coach at the XL Academy at Cardfiff Met (Cyncoed). Prior to that she had many successful years as Head Coach at Penarth Windsor.

Melissa plans to build on the success of Rob’s coaching programme with mini, junior and adult coaching continuing on a similar timetable as last term. The Autumn Coaching term will commence on Monday 8th September and the full Coaching Programme will be sent out in the next few days.

With that in mind, Melissa’s holding an OPEN AFTERNOON / EVENING on Thursday 4th September from 3 – 8pm and would love to meet as many members as possible and tell them about her future plans. It’s a great chance to ‘say hello’ and sign up for the Autumn Coaching courses, so please try and pop down to the Club (rain or shine) to meet her.If you can’t make it that day, Melissa can be reached on 07837 172478 or email melissahouse9@hotmail.co.uk.

We are sure all members will give Melissa and her family a great welcome to the Club and we look forward to having her with us for many years to come!
