WTC Lease Update

Update from the WTC Committee about the current lease position:

The club served a notice on the landlords in January to force them to say whether they were looking to develop the site or not. While they are not seeking to end the tenancy at the end of 2019 they have told us they do want to take the site back in 2-3 years’ time. We can only suppose this is for the purposes of development.

We are taking further legal and other professional advice about how we can best resist this threat.

If the landlords remain on this course, then there is a high risk that we will have to go to court to fight for a new lease on reasonable terms.

We would like to thank everyone from across the community for their support.  It has been amazing and has been invaluable as we take the fight forward.

We will keep everyone informed of developments and hope we can count on the continuation of the support shown so far as we battle to ensure the club remains a valued community asset for many more years to come.

Charles Woodings

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the passing on Monday 26th November of one of our oldest social members, Charles Woodings, at the University Hospital of Wales. Charles had not been well for some time and had not been able to get to the Club much over the past 12 months or so, but for very many years Charles was one of the regulars on evenings when the bar was open.

Charles was born and raised in Abergavenny but moved to Cardiff as a young man where he served in the police force with distinction for many years. Charles had a raft of stories about his time on the force – both amusing and sometimes truly hair-raising. Charles loved music and was a keen member of a number of male voice choirs, a passion which saw him travel round Europe and beyond on various choir tours. In retirement, he maintained a keen interest in the politics and current affairs, the fortunes of the Welsh rugby team and a fierce determination to complete the Daily Telegraph cryptic crossword within half an hour!

While never a tennis player himself, Charles contributed much to the social fabric of the Club and helped out in numerous ways over the years. Charles generously donated a significant sum of money towards the resurfacing of courts 1-3 back in 2015 but never mentioned it and never wanted it to be well known within the Club. He was a private, reserved man but many of us counted him as a true friend. He will be missed.

The funeral is on Tuesday 11th December at 10:15 am at Thornhill Crematorium, then afterwards at the WTC Clubhouse.
