With the Summer Tournament coming to a close this weekend, the Autumn Tournament sign-up will be available from 1st September until the 14th with the draw available from the week after. Autumn Finals Day is on Saturday 9th November.
After a short break for the summer, Tennis and Tea is back on Sept 14 with play from 2 – 4 pm with some tea and cakes after. This is a great opportunity for all players to mix in ahead of the Winter season starting.
The Firsts came a very close 3rd in Division 1 East losing out on 2nd place, and promotion, due to Rubbers count-back to Penarth 1. The Second team also finished 3rd in Division 4 East finishing just 5 points off 2nd place in a very competitive division.
The First team were playing in the top regional division, Premier 1, with the best Men’s players in South Wales. They played some brilliant tennis through the season although unfortunately finished 5th, ahead of Rhiwbina in 6th, and will play in Premier 2 next Summer Season. This marks the best performance for the Whitchurch Men’s 1sts in the top Division. The Seconds had a very strong season coming 2nd in Division 4 East, missing out on coming top by 1 point, and will be promoted for next year. The Third team were playing in Division 7 East finishing 3rd, just a few points off 2nd place.
Overall it was a very positive season for the club with some good end of season momentum going into the Winter Season.
All of the Warm-up matches and weekend World Cup matches will be shown on the big screen over the next couple of months. Members, Family and friends are welcome to come along with the bar being open too.

Negotiations with the landlords about the terms of the new tenancy are continuing. We are being advised by our solicitors Hugh James and are actively reviewing whether we need to trigger the court process as a means of getting a fair deal for the club. The good news is that we know that the immediate short-term future of the club is secure.
Our recent EGM gave overwhelming support to the committee to incur expenditure by going to court if necessary. We have also held a very well-attended event for our neighbours and continue to receive much-valued support from that quarter.
We are very confident that we can get better terms than those currently on offer and will continue to keep you informed.
Just around the corner is the 2019 Summer Tournament Finals Day with lots of great matches already played in the run up to the big day. Play will start from 11:30 with the Wales vs Ireland World Cup Warm-up match on the big screen, kick-off at 14:30.
Order of Play
Men’s Doubles and Ladies Singles
Note: Some matches cannot be played concurrently due to players in multiple finals.
Yesterday, 6 July, was a hugely busy day at the club! Not only was the men’s first team playing and winning in the top division of Welsh tennis, there was an incredibly successful social tennis afternoon with a sumptuous tea as well as a neighbours’ event.
In the early evening, concerned neighbours from the local area came to the clubhouse to hear an update on the lease. They were told how the club had tried to reach an agreed position with the landlords to safeguard the community asset but that this had not been possible and that whilst we still hope to secure a deal directly with the landlords, we have had no choice but to begin formal legal proceedings to protect our position.
The many neighbours during the day heard that the next step is an EGM on 18 July to secure the authority required to spend the significant sums needed to go through the full court process. The mood of the neighbours was hugely supportive with many strong pledges to provide financial support and professional advice, free of charge, if required.
A hugely successful day!
An EGM for all WTC members has been called for 8.00pm on Thursday 18 July. Please can members make every effort to attend.
